Hanabi Hyuga (日向ハナビ, Hyūga Hanabi) is a kunoichi of Konohagakure and the heiress of the Hyūga Clan. She is the daughter of Hiashi Hyūga and the younger sister of Hinata Uzumaki, as well as the aunt of Boruto and Himawari Uzumaki. She is currently Team 15's leader.

Background[]

Early Life[]

Hanabi is the youngest daughter of the Hyūga clan's main branch, headed by Hiashi Hyūga. While Hinata had been considered unsuited for the role of heiress[1], Hiashi changed his focus to Hanabi, whose talent clearly outshone his sister's in sparring matches despite being five years younger, and decided to make her the future heiress of the Hyūga Clan and deeming Hinata a waste of time[2]. Hanabi became determined to prove herself worthy of being the next head of the clan.

Personality[]

Despite not having focus in the manga, Hanabi showed to be a fierce and strong girl during her training with Hiashi.

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Hanabi is supportive of Hinata's feelings for Naruto, often teasing her sister[3]. She is also described as a "fashionable young woman and extravagant in her tastes"[4].

As adult, Hanabi left her carefree and innocent attitude behind and is now very focused on her duties as heiress of the Hyūga Clan and sensei. However, Hanabi is a loving aunt, doting Boruto and Himawari when they visit the Hyūga compound and encouraging them to be independent individuals[5]. Hanabi also takes great pride in her cooking, comically annoyed when Boruto stated that her sister was better[6]. She also feels compassionate for Boruto and wants to see him succeed, which she tries to fulfill by helping him as much as she can, a feeling she shares with Konohamaru Sarutobi[7].

Hanabi shows to be a very strict sensei to her students. Whenever they disobey her, Hanabi becomes merciless and she doesn't hesitate to scold Namida and Wasabi for their reckless behavior against missing-nin listed in the Bingo Book. However, Hanabi aspires to help her students reach their full potential, as seen when she refused to take it easy on Namida to polish her Water Release skills despite crying for help. She also expresses enjoying her time with her team on her off days.

Appearance[]

Hanabi is a tall woman with brown hair styled in a long loose ponytail that reaches her knees. She also has a bang that frames her face from the middle to the left side.

She wears a long yellow kimono with a white obi.

Abilities[]

According to Hiashi, Hanabi showed more talent and potential than her sister at a young age[1]. She proved herself to be a worthy future clan head and became the instructor of a genin team while also training as the heiress of the Hyūga Clan[2].

Taijutsu[]

Hanabi's Revolving Heaven

From a young age, Hanabi has demonstrated a talent and strong instincts in taijutsu. Despite not being trained as early as her sister, Hanabi showed to able to fight on par with Hinata with only five years old after her solo training, and became very proficient in the Gentle Fist. In the anime, she showed great talent and elegance during a duel with Boruto, able to effortlessly dodge and parry all of his attacks used alongside his shadow clones. She could be seen performing several of her clan's advanced hiden techniques, able to block or repel anything in her immediate vicinity the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven, or attack a target from a distance using the Eight Trigrams Vaccum Palm[3].

Byakugan[]

Hanabi's Byakugan

Hanabi's activated Byakugan.

As a Hyūga, Hanabi possesses the Byakugan, a kekkei genkai dōjutsu. By the time she becomes genin, her Byakugan had the perception of a grown adult. Toneri Ōtsutsuki described her Byakugan as being "very pure" and specifically targeted her Byakugan in order to awaken the Tenseigan[4]. When activated, it grants her an almost 360 degrees field of vision (except for a small blind spot), x-ray vision and the ability to see chakra accurate enough to target the chakra pathway system.

Academy Arc[]

Boruto vs Hanabi

In the anime, Hanabi greeted Boruto and Himawari, who were visiting the Hyūga compound with Naruto. She reprimands her father for fawning over his grandchildren in such an embarrassing way but later runs to them and crushes them into a big hug. While Naruto meets with Hiashi to discuss Boruto's presumed Byakugan, Hanabi plays with Himawari in the yard until it's decided to prove the theory. Hiashi proposed a sparring match to test the newly awakened Byakugan. However, Hanabi insisted that she would fight in his place, concerned for her father's back pain and Boruto's well-being due to Hiashi's lack of restraint.

Boruto eagerly accepted, but the dōjutsu didn't manifest during the match, leading to Hanabi easily defeating Boruto. The family concluded that Boruto hadn't awakened the Byakugan. Afterwards, Hiashi decided that the Naruto and his children would spend the night in the compound and Hanabi eagerly cooked a meal for everyone. She asked her nephew about the taste and moped when Boruto expressed that he preferred Hinata's cooking. Later, seeing Boruto sulking, Hanabi encouraged him to keep working hard and to take comfort in having her finding her nephew pouting, Hanabi comforted him, encouraging him to keep working hard and to take comfort in having her support if things got difficult.

Genin Mission Arc[]

In the anime, after the Genin Exams concluded, Hanabi went to the Academy, where Shino Aburame introduces her new assigned students, Sumire Kakei, Wasabi Izuno and Namida Suzumeno. Hanabi introduces herself as Team 15's captain and expresses her excitement to working with the girls. Later, Naruto gave them their first mission as Team 15.

Byakuya Gang Arc[]

In the anime, several Konoha villagers protested against the Kaminarimon Company in favor of the Byakuya Gang, whose popularity was raising among civilians. Team 15 was tasked with appeasing the protest. It was later discovered that the majority of supporters were under genjutsu and the shinobi were in charge of dispelling it.

Naruto Shinden: Parent and Child Day[]

Hanabi sent a message to Hinata telling her of Hiashi's back injury in the hopes she would come to the Hyūga compound with Boruto and Himawari. However, due to how Hanabi expressed the situation in the letter, Hinata believed that her father was in a near death situation and quickly left the house with her children at home. Upon seeing Hinata arrive alone to the compound, Hanabi collapsed in tears, which worried Hinata about the severity of the situation and convinced that Hiashi would pass soon. When Hanabi asked Hinata why she hadn't brought Boruto and Himawari instead of worrying about Hiashi's condition, Hinata realized the confusion.

Hinata and Hanabi discussed about Hiashi and his stark change in personality, becoming a doting grandfather when, in the past, he was a strict and serious head of the clan. Hanabi blamed it on Hinata, saying that she constantly referred to Hiashi as "grandfather" when Boruto and Himawari were around, making him feel forced to act like an old man. Hiashi, who was listening to their conversation about him, got tired of the gossiping and called them into his bedroom. Hanabi listened as Hinata told Hiashi about how Boruto and Himawari were dealing with Naruto's long work hours, which kept him from home. Hanabi was also amused to hear how worried Hinata was that Boruto was becoming independent, specifically by his recent purchase of pink pants.

Hiashi was glad to learn that Boruto seemed to like the color pink and thought about buying him some pink gifts. Hinata suggested that Boruto would prefer some other gifts, such as the Extreme: Shinobi Picture Scrolls he's started collecting recently. Neither Hiashi or Hinata were familiar with them, but Hanabi turned out to be quite knowledgeable and claimed to have "some". She went to her room to show them and came back bringing a thick folder with cards. Hanabi explained their rarity system, prompting Hiashi to decide to give Boruto a card of himself. When Hanabi showed him his card, he was devastated to discover that it's only a rare card, and not a super rare or extremely super rare card as he expected.

Hiashi was determined to somehow raise his card's status to extremely super rare. Hanabi pointed out that the rarest cards are former Hokage or Sannin, so he'd need to do something of their calibre. Hiashi decided to go to the Hokage Residence to ask Naruto for a dangerous mission, with Hinata and Hanabi on tow. At the Hokage door, Shikamaru Nara told them that their office isn't in charge of mission requests, but seeing Hiashi's determination, he told them about a mission in the Konoha Hot Springs district. A thief had stolen some explosives used for excavation and was hiding in the thick mists. Because the explosives could easily be used for terrorist acts, it was urgent that the thief be captured, and the Byakugan was the best way to find the thief quickly. Hiashi accepted the mission, intending to carry it out alone, but Hanabi volunteered to join him and told Hinata to come as well since it had been a decade since she went on a mission. Hinata, remembering Hanabi's words that she was responsible for Hiashi's insecurities, agreed to join them.

Hinata, Hiashi, and Hanabi hurried to the area of the hot springs district where the thief was last spotted. Like the report mentioned, the mists were incredibly thick, and without the Byakugan it would be impossible for them to see where they were going. For this reason, Hinata and Hanabi discussed that the thief's decision to hide there didn't make sense to them, as there's not much harm he could do in the area and he was likely to end up becoming lost. While discussing, Hiashi located the suspected thief and immediately attacked with Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, successfully knocking out his target. However, the man he attacked turned out to be the client that asked for help. It turned out that the powder wasn't stolen, it had been a miscalculation, and the criminals that had escaped was misinformation. The mission was cancelled too late and an apology was sent to the Hokage.

Because of the delay, Hinata and Hanabi decided to spend the night at one of the hot springs. Hinata still wanted to go home, but Hanabi convinced her to trust Boruto and Himawari to look after themselves. Because the following day was Parent and Child Day, there were very few people staying at the inn, giving Hinata and Hanabi exclusive use of the hot springs. As they enjoyed the facilities, Hanabi expressed that Hiashi wanted Hinata to start living in the Hyūga compound again so that he could also take care of Boruto and Himawari while Naruto is reluctant to spend time with his family. Hinata rejected the idea, but it turned out that Hanabi approved of it and believed it would be beneficial to both Hinata and Hiashi. Hanabi proposed a sparring match, and if she wins then Hinata would need to move in with her and Hiashi. Because Hinata had been living as a housewife for the last decade, Hanabi expected that the match would end quickly. Since Hinata had been helping Boruto train, she's instead able to go toe-to-toe with Hanabi.

In the middle of the spar, Hanabi continued trying to convince Hinata. She conceded that Hiashi would be happy to have Boruto and Himawari live with him and that Boruto would benefit from the Hyūga's teachings. Moreover, Naruto's ongoing neglect of his family made him unworthy of having that family at all and that means that Naruto was breaking his wedding vows. Hinata denied this latter claim and took advantage of Hanabi's off guard stance to defeat her. As Hanabi lied in the hot spring, disappointed, Hinata revealed that she and Naruto stayed at this very inn during their honeymoon. To be there again reminded her of her time with Naruto, just as the home she shared with him reminded her of raising her children. Although things may not be ideal in her relationship right now, Hinata would not abandon her home and the memories she had of it. Hanabi conceded, if only to stop Hinata from talking about how much she loves Naruto.

In the morning, Hinata, Hanabi, and Hiashi walked back to Konoha. Hiashi remained disappointed that he couldn't come up with a gift fitting Boruto and Himawari's tastes. Hanabi suggested that he do exactly that: give them their favorite foods. Hiashi, who'd been hanging his head and walking slowly, picked up his pace with head held high, as he so liked the idea that he wanted to immediately begin looking for the ideal foods. Hanabi and Hinata chased after him.

Versus Momoshiki Arc[]

In the anime, Hanabi prepares her team for the upcoming Chūnin Exams. They were assigned with a mission to retrieve all the animals that had escaped from the Fire Park. Hanabi told her students to handle the smaller animals, while she went after the bigger and more dangerous ones. During this task, she was approached by Sai Yamanaka to discuss the special conditions surrounding Sumire and her development since the Nue incident. Later, when Hanabi went to find the last creature, a giant white wolf, she saw her students being attacked by it but decided to watch their reaction to that situation. She was surprised to see her team take down the wolf, and congratulated the girls on their performance.

On the day of the final stage of the Chūnin Exams, Hanabi witnessed Naruto fight Momoshiki's Tailed Beast Ball from a safe distance alongside Sumire.

Hanabi trains Namida

Hanabi encourages Namida.

Days later, Namida began worrying that her only effective technique was harming her teammates, as well as her enemies, so she decided to develop a new technique. Happy for her student's resolve, Hanabi pushed Namida to enhance her chakra control through exerting training sessions. While these exercises improved Namida's performance, the team was assigned with a mission to capture bandits and her new technique proved to be useless. When one of the thieves stole a sacred document, Hanabi went after him with Nue. When Nue disappeared back to Sumire, Hanabi realized that the threat was back with her team and quickly turned back. After she arrived, Hanabi discovered that Namida had developed a new screaming technique, much more advanced than before. However, Namida was still not used to this technique and Hanabi continued to train her.

When Sumire was transferred to the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team, Naruto asked The Land of Iron to send an exchange student to join Team 15. They sent Tsubaki Kurogane, making them the first team to have a samurai.

One day, when Hiashi's birthday was approaching, Hanabi suggested to throw him a party. She was approached by Boruto, who asked her what to buy his grandfather for his birthday, but Hanabi wasn't sure either. After the celebration, Boruto suggested a family photo.
